Our wines are the finest expression of climate and soil in northern Burgenland – ripe, dense, fruity and playful. They are balanced in personality and character with velvety tannins and a good length.

Our vineyards are located in the Neusiedlersee wine-growing region on a unique gravel bank. It was formed over two million years ago from the side arms of the ancient Danube and stretches today over more than five kilometres. The gravel arrived in our region with the river on its way to the Black Sea. At that time, the Danube ran along the Parndorf Platte and formed a loop past the Seewinkel, where our winery is located today.

Our vineyards around the small municipality of Tadten are mainly planted with St. Laurent and Zweigelt vines. Some of the vines are well over forty years old. In addition, the grape varieties Welschriesling, Chardonnay and our blend varieties Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive here.

It is not only the soil, but also the special climate in the northernmost part of Burgenland that make our wines so special. Our vines grow at an altitude of 120 meters, just a few kilometres from the Hungarian border, in a region that belongs to the north-western edge of the Hungarian Plain and is influenced by a Pannonian climate.

Hot, dry summers are usually followed by a very sunny autumn, allowing our grapes to ripen gently, warmly and peacefully. In one year, the grapes receive around five hundred millimetres of rainfall and enjoy the highest temperatures in Austria. These conditions, combined with the abundance of water from nearby Lake Neusiedl, create a climate that allows our vines to enjoy a long growing season.

Our vines find optimal conditions in the midst of their natural surroundings. The greening in our vineyards emphasizes the ecological value of plant diversity in the vineyard. Through our organic cultivation, we specifically promote various animal and plant species in order to sustainably strengthen ecological balance.

Our grapes ripen on a soil of brown earth and gravel. This stores the sun’s energy and warms the vines. Its barrenness gives our wines velvety tannins and a ripe, dense, fruity and playful flavour.

During green harvest, we reduce the yield per wine to just a few grapes. Our uncompromising and consistent work in the vineyard and cellar results in the finest and varietal expression of the regional climate and soil, which is reflected in every sip of our wines.

As a young boy, Erich Sattler spent a lot of time playing in the vineyards, where he developed a deep appreciation for nature. He studied viticulture at the Krems School of Viticulture and later at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna. Since then, he has devoted himself entirely to wine production.

The winemaker took over the winery – formerly also with agriculture – in 2000 from Regina and Josef Sattler, who helped to establish the winery. Erich Sattler and his wife Vanessa Knirsch run their winery with great passion for sustainability and biodiversity. Erich’s tasks include the cultivation of the vineyards, cellar-work and winemaking. Erich’s favourite grape variety is Zweigelt.

“Our approach stands for environmentally friendly, extensive farming that protects our natural habitat. We have committed ourselves to this and that is how we work – honestly with soil and plants.”

Erich Sattler

Erich’s wife Vanessa Knirsch has been contributing her knowledge to our production since 2015. The graduate of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna has dedicated herself entirely to the topic of “wine”, with a particular focus on sustainable and biodiversity-promoting production. Through her years of experience, Vanessa has not only developed a deep understanding of the art of viticulture, but also a special eye for the individual characteristics of each wine.

The winemaker takes care of the cellar, winemaking and tastings. Vanessa and Erich tackle most of the tasks together, which is what makes the character of this fine winery. Vanessa’s favourite grape variety is St. Laurent.

“Our heart’s variety is St. Laurent. We produce the finest wines, and most recently sparkling wines, from St. Laurent grapes, because we love this grape variety and its taste always fascinates us anew. So, we only produce what we truly enjoy.”

Vanessa Knirsch

Ripe, dense, fruity, playful flavours and velvety tannins flow from every bottle. Our wines are typical of the variety and have excellent ageing potential. All of them are fine wines to keep although you may want to drink them straight away.

We love balanced wines with personality and character. The acidity is pleasant and the alcohol content is in balance with the body and density of each wine.

We do not use any technical or artificial methods of flavour concentration out of conviction.

We export most of our wines to Germany, Switzerland and the USA. There you can find our wines in selected restaurants in Berlin, Zürich and New York.

We love and swear by the potential of the St. Laurent grape. Its high complexity and demanding nature makes this variety unique. Wine production can truly be a challenge, but the result is breath taking. It reveals itself in top wines and sparkling wines full of expression. We are always delighted!

This grape variety is one of the most demanding of all. It requires dedication and passion, which is later revealed in every sip. Choosing St. Laurent grape may be challenging, but the unique Burgundy structure, the purple-red color, and the fine scents of fruits make our efforts worthwhile.

The St. Laurent grape is known as a diva in the vineyard and in the cellar. It undergoes a very demanding fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for classic wines. The reserve is fermented in open vats and then matured further in small French oak barrels.

Welschriesling

A refreshing start!
Gently pressed and cold fermented, our Welschriesling skilfully preserves its fruity aromas. After a few months resting in stainless steel tanks on fine lees, it shows a floral bouquet, lively acidity, medium body and a fruity, playful flavour.

Chardonnay

The art of maturity!

The yellow-gold Chardonnay unfolds a bouquet of quince and Nashi pear. There are also spicy notes and hints of meadow flowers. After careful maturation in wooden barrels, the reserve reveals itself seductively complex with creamy, toasty nuances of brioche and dried fruit flavours.

Zweigelt & St. Laurent Rosé

A touch of elegance!

Our Rosé wines are made using the traditional Saignée method. After a short maceration, the extracted grape juice is vinified like white wine, for a bouquet of raspberries and sour cherries, fresh and playfully fruity on the palate.

St. Laurent

The Diva unfolds!

St. Laurent is one of the most demanding grape varieties. It requires dedication and passion, and is as challenging in the vineyard and in the cellar. Our efforts are rewarded with a unique Burgundy structure, a purple-red color, and the finest aroma of ripe fruits.

Heideboden Cuvée

The very essence of our soils!

Our harmonious and fascinating blend of Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine embodies the impressive potential and diversity of our vineyards and proves that international varieties also thrive here in Burgenland.

The new one: Brut Nature

What a celebration! Elegant fruit aroma of red fruits make our carefully and newly composed sparkling wine from St. Laurent grapes sophisticated and special. The acidity is refreshing, the full texture and elegant bouquet give this new sparkling wine a fine, creamy and strong character. It’s impossible not to fall in love with it!

“Erich is one of the few winemakers who are not out to get a lot of attention, but want to offer real pleasure with his wines. I love this type of wine, you take the first sip and suddenly the glass is empty without realising it.”

Terry Theise

“Austrian red wines reward wine drinkers with a sense of adventure. Erich Sattler’s St. Laurent is very elegant, with a good body and a velvety texture. The wine was one of the favourites in our blind tasting of Austrian red wines.”

The Wall Street Journal

“Elegant, dark, fruity nose with cherry confit and blueberries, flavoursome tannins, wonderfully clean and balanced, good length, well-structured and very good. The Zweigelt Reserve rightly became our Zweigelt Grand Cru winner.”

À la Carte

“Bright ruby-purple colour, straightforward, varietal bouquet, wonderful lilac notes and violets. Savoury on the palate, sweetish barrique notes, giving the texture a buttery note, seductively vinified.”

Rene Gabriel

“Erich Sattler has recognised the potential of the vineyards around Tadten and uses it to produce excellent, dense and powerful red wines. The combination of regional terroir and grape varieties results in wines with their own character and absolute top quality.”

Klaus Egle

“The jury was particularly impressed with the performance in the St. Laurent variety, which was able to convince across the board and clearly underlined its claim to becoming Austria’s most exciting variety. Erich Sattler St. Laurent Reserve was, as so often, highly rated and achieved 2nd place in the Falstaff Red Wine Guide.”
