Gravel. A lot of gravel. Sometimes concealed and other times breaking through light layers of brown earth, the soil in our vineyards is mainly composed of gravel, lots of it. It was left behind by the Danube River, which ran through this region a long time ago.  Gravel is very good for the vine stocks lending to fine tannins and fruit.

Another important aspect is the climate of the Burgenland region. Grapes are directly affected by the hot, dry summers followed by sunny autumns passing over the grapes one last time before harvest. The nearby lake Neusiedlersee acts as a climate control, cooling the vineyards in the summer and warming them in the winter. The grape varieties planted in the vineyards are predominantly Zweigelt and St.Laurent, some of which are more than 40 years old. The winery also hassome Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Welschriesling as well as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyards are located around the village of Tadten in the winegrowing district of Neusiedlersee. Thispart of the wine region of Burgenland is in the very east of Austriaat an elevation of 120m/400ft and latitude of47,7º, only a few kilometers from Hungary. The region is at the northwestern edge of the Small Hungarian Plain and hasa Pannonian climate with an average annual rainfall of 500mm. It has thehighest summer temperatures of Austriaand is moderated by the lake Neusiedlersee bringing about long vegetation periods.

The vines around Tadten are part of an enormous gravel bar that stretches more than five kilometers and formed more than two million years ago by the ancient riverbeds of the Danube. The soils are mineralic and layered with gravel, brown earth and occasionally sand.

The winery practices thorough vineyard management such as‘green harvest’, which reduces yields to a few bunches per vine and emphasizes the fruit and natural concentration of the wine. The grapes are harvested by hand at full ripeness and are transported carefully to the nearby winery. Out of the consequent and uncompromising hard work in the vineyards, emerges an energetic, variety-typical expression of climate and soil. The winery is not organic but practices certified minimal impact vineyard management. Irrigation is only used in case of draught.
